Find out more about Roxane Gilmore

Roxane Gatling Gilmore is a wife, mother and college professor who understands the daily complexities of modern family life.

A native Virginian, Roxane Gatling was born in Suffolk and graduated from Suffolk High School. She is an alumna of the University of Virginia. She earned her B.A. in history, classics and anthropology, M.A. in ancient history in 1978, and is currently completing her Ph.D. in ancient history.

While a student and teaching assistant at the University of Virginia, Roxane met and married Jim Gilmore. In 1992, she began teaching at Henrico and Chesterfield County Public Schools. Roxane is now a professor of classics at Randolph Macon College. Her classes include Latin, Women in Ancient Literature, Roman History, Greek History, Epic Poetry and Roman Britain.


Roxane created an Internet clearinghouse of resources for teachers, parents, students and the business world. The Department of Technology and the Department of Education continue to partner with Mrs. Gilmore in her efforts to provide teachers with state-of-the-art educational resources. Roxane is also proud to be a partner of the Virginia Literacy Foundation, sharing her love of learning and passion for books with students of all ages.
She is working with the Virginia Tourism Corporation to promote Virginia's historic, cultural and recreational treasures. Roxane was recently appointed to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, and is excited about serving as honorary chair of Jamestown Celebration 2007steering committee.


Roxane also serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In 1994, Roxane was appointed to the Family and Children's Trust Fund (FACT) where she continues to help raise funds to combat violence and sexual assault aimed at children.

Roxane and Jim's greatest joy comes from raising their two sons, 13-year-old Ashton and Jay, who is 17. Roxane and Jim are active supporters of their children's school-related activities including youth football, Little League, youth basketball and swim team. The Gilmores are active members of River Road Methodist Church.
